According to the United Nations, “Female Genital Mutilation
(FGM) comprises of all procedures that involves altering or injuring the female
genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a
violation of human rights of girls and women”.
This practice shows inequality between the sexes, it is an
extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. “it violates their
right to health, security and physical integrity, right to be free from torture
and cruelty, inhuman and degrading treatment, and can lead to death.
According to research, over 200 million girls and women in
the world alive today have undergone some form of female genital mutilation.
FGM will always be a violation of the rights of girls and women, and that is
why GENUS MUNDI, a gender equality advocate community in Nigeria, totally condemns
this barbaric practice.
